The majority of our residences have access to the University of Alberta's wireless internet service (UWS). The strength and quality of the signal can be affected by the location of the UWS access points, the number of users at any given time, as well as occasional interference by microwaves and other wireless devices, such as routers. Common areas in each residence tend to have the best access.
You can connect a computer or mobile device to UWS using your CCID/password (instructions). The connection is suitable for regular academic activities, such as email and browsing the internet. Video streaming may not be supported during peak usage.
Devices such as gaming consoles and smart TVs are not able to connect to the service.
If the service provided by UWS is not sufficient for your needs, you may use a wired connection to access the internet.
Some of our residences include a wired connection; others will require you to contact and subscribe to service from a local ISP (Internet Service Provider). Select your residence below to see your options for wired internet connections.
If you would like to connect your own router or wireless access point in your room, you must follow the configuration rules:
Review the IST policy that you agree to comply with when you use the residence internet service [ HERE ].
If you have questions about any of the information on this page, please contact Residence Internet Support at email@example.com.
Each room includes a wired internet connection (RIS - Residence Internet Service). You will need to provide your own (Cat6) network cable and connect it from your computer into the wall jack.
*With the exception of RHA House, the stand-alone houses in East Campus Village do not have UWS.
Residents in East Campus have the option of purchasing Shaw Internet Service (a local ISP). You must contact them directly to make arrangements to have the cable Internet activated in your house. Students may be eligible for a special rate plan by request.
Please note: You will be responsible for managing and maintaining your account and contract with Shaw.
As these two communities are not located on the main campus, access to UWS is limited to the common areas.
Michener Park: gym, laundry room and maintenance shop, and the 1st, 2nd and 16th floor common areas in Vanier House.
Newton Place: the lobby and the Nest
Residents have the option of subscribing to a local ISP (Internet Service Provider), either Shaw or Telus. You must contact them directly to make arrangements to have the line in your unit activated for internet service.
Please note: You will be responsible for managing and maintaining your account and contract with your local ISP.
