Moving away from home and starting University classes can be a daunting mountain to climb. BaseCamp is the University of Alberta’s first year residence Orientation program designed to provide new students living in residence early access to resources, experiences, and learning opportunities to help them transition into University. Throughout the four-day program, first-year residents will have the opportunity to form close relations with other students on your floor, and get settled comfortably in their campus and community environment before classes begin.

BaseCamp will be kicking-off in the Universiade Pavilion (Butterdome) on Monday, August 27, 2018 from 7–8 p.m. All first-year Lister and RSJ residents are invited. You will have a chance to celebrate with your new peers, win free swag, meet your Residence Coordinators, and learn more about your BaseCamp experience!

In the final week before classes begin, you along with your peers and Resident Assistants (RAs) will take part in a variety of activities and events that are sure to leave a lasting impact on your transition to life in residence and at the University of Alberta.

During BaseCamp, you will have the chance to:

  • settle into your new home
  • discover campus and where your classes will be
  • bond with your floormates and make new friends throughout residence
  • develop a personal and academic support network
  • make connections with helpful resources

Our goal is to help you learn the tools and skills that will help you achieve success in University!

Remember: As a first-year student moving into Lister Residence or Résidence Saint-Jean, you are automatically registered in BaseCamp. BaseCamp is your Orientation experience in Residence. For more information about other parts of your UAlberta Orientation experience, please visit:

Please be aware that due to the large number of students who participate in BaseCamp, each schedule differs by floor.
You will receive the full BaseCamp schedule for your floor when you move in.

BaseCamp Online is offered through UAlberta’s eClass (Moodle), the online system that is used for University of Alberta classes. It is simple to use, and you will automatically be enrolled in the online program after August 1st. A direct link will be available on the Residence Services website and you will have access to the program throughout the academic year.

BaseCamp Online provides pre-arrival information, as well as extra information that you can use as a resource during and after BaseCamp. This will give you a clearer idea of what to expect prior to Move-In and BaseCamp.

BaseCamp Online also features interactive components, like discussion boards and quizzes, to connect you with other first-year students. BaseCamp Online will lead you to the appropriate resources and services that you can access when faced with any academic, transitional or personal issues.

Some modules included in BaseCamp Online are:

  • Living in Residence
  • Transition from High School to University
  • Academic Life
  • Degree and Career Planning
  • Ways to Get Involved on Campus

Please contact the Residence Life Intern at with any questions about your BaseCamp experience.
